Key Technical Notes

Material Drying Required:PMMA must be dried at 80-90°C for 2-4 hours before processing (moisture ≤0.04%)

Thermal Sensitivity:Max processing temperature 280°C; degradation occurs rapidly above this temperature

Glass Transition Temp:Tg = 105°C (defines continuous use temperature <90°C)

Processing Recommendations

For thin-wall parts (<2mm):Increase melt temp to 240-260°C and mold temp to 80°C

Mold Requirements:High polish surfaces (Ra ≤0.1μm) needed for optical clarity applications

Gate Design:Should be at least 80% of part thickness; use submarine/tunnel gates

Post-Processing & Quality Control

Annealing:80-90°C for 1-4 hours to relieve internal stresses

Solvent Vapor Polishing:Use chloroform or dichloromethane vapor for optical quality surface

UV Stability:Coatings required for outdoor applications; maintain transmittance >88% after 10 years

Acrylics for Machining

LML offers several aluminum alloys in its long list of available manufacturing materials. Two of those alloys are especially well-suited material options for CNC machining, whether milling or turning: Aluminum 6061 and 7075.Aluminum 7075 T651 and T7: Benefits include high strength, hardness, low weight, corrosion resistance, and high heat tolerance. See data sheet for more information.Aluminum 2024 T3: This high-strength alloy offers a high strength-to-weight ratio and high corrosion resistance. Acrylics for Machining

CNC machined

Aluminum is a relatively easy metal to machine which makes it great for CNC machining. Aluminum has useful properties for machining such as being lightweight, malleable, tractable and overall good durability. It being so light and easy to work with means that it can be used for a wide variety of applications. CNC machined Aluminum parts begin as a raw piece of metal which is cut down bit by bit to create a desired shape or object. This process is done most accurately with a CNC (Computerized Numerical Control) machine which can produce almost any three dimensional object designed via CAD (Computer Aided Design) software.

Acrylics machine shops

Our broad network of manufacturing partners includes over 240 Aluminum machine shops. Having this huge capacity and wide range of machinery available lets us fulfill a massive variety of orders and produce very complex parts. Our machine shops can produce custom Aluminum parts with CNC turning machines and 3- & 5-axis CNC milling machines. Our machine shops offer 13 different types of Aluminum: Aluminum 6061-T6, Aluminum 7075-T6, Aluminum 6082, Aluminum 5083, Aluminum 6063, Aluminum 5052, Aluminum 2024, Aluminum 7050, Aluminum MIC6, Aluminum 2017, Aluminum A380 and Aluminum 2014.
