Stainless steels for Machining

LML offers several stainless steel grades in its long list of available manufacturing materials. Two of those grades are especially well-suited material options for CNC machining, whether milling or turning: Stainless Steel 304 and 316.Stainless Steel 304: Benefits include good corrosion resistance, formability, and weldability. Widely used for food processing equipment, pharmaceutical components, and architectural hardware. See data sheet for more information.Stainless Steel 316: This alloy contains added molybdenum for enhanced corrosion resistance. Especially applicable in marine hardware, chemical processing equipment, and medical implants. See data sheet for more information.GET INSTANT QUOTE

Stainless Steel for Machining

Mechanical Strength & Ductility

Austenitic grades (304, 316) achieve tensile strength of 515 MPa with 40% elongation, enabling complex forming without fracture.
Martensitic grades (410, 420, 440C) reach 58-60 HRC post-heat treatment for high-wear components like bearings and cutting tools.
Corrosion Resistance Mechanism
Chromium (≥10.5%) forms a self-healing Cr₂O₃ oxide layer, resisting chemical/atmospheric corrosion critical for medical, marine, and chemical processing equipment.
Molybdenum addition in 316/L enhances pitting resistance in chloride-rich environments.
Thermal Stability
Maintains structural integrity up to 750°C (austenitic) with low thermal expansion (17.5 µm/m·°C for 316), minimizing dimensional drift during machinin

Post-Machining Treatments

Passivation: Nitric acid bath removes iron contaminants, restoring Cr₂O₃ layer.
Electropolishing: Achieves Ra 0.1 µm mirror finishes while enhancing corrosion resistance.
Shot Peening: Induces compressive stresses to improve fatigue life in aerospace components.
PVD Coatings: TiN/AlCrN for wear resistance in high-friction applications (e.g., valve seats

 Industry-Specific Applications

Medical: 17-4PH surgical tools (CNC-turned + electropolished) for biocompatibility
.
Aerospace: 15-5PH landing gear parts machined via 5-axis milling with ±0.005mm tolerance
.
Automotive: 304L fuel rails (deep-drawn + laser-welded) leveraging formability
.
Energy: Inconel 625 turbine blades (slow EDM + abrasive flow machining)
